Music for a Solemnity
A Tribute to John Williams
Composed in 1997 on commission by the Christian Music Association “Wilhelmina,” Hoogeveen.
For Music for a Solemnity (1996), I drew inspiration from two distinct sources: the centuries-old tradition in the Drenthe city of Hoogeveen, where drums were used to call people to church, and the music of the renowned American composer John Williams. This unique combination resulted in a festive piece featuring rhythmic patterns and melodic lines through which I pay homage to Williams’ remarkable body of work.
