Le Lion de Belfort
A Tribute to the sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi
For Concert Band, Three-part Mixed Choir and Narrator
Commissioned by l’Orchestre d’Harmonie de la Ville de Belfort
Le Lion de Belfort was composed for the official inauguration of the monumental sculpture Le Lion de Belfort, an enormous red sandstone lion that dominates the landscape of the French city of Belfort. Measuring 22 meters in length and 11 meters in height, the lion symbolizes the heroic French resistance during the Prussian siege of Belfort in 1870–1871.
To enhance the work’s impact, I included a narrator and a three-part choir in the concert band instrumentation, incorporating texts specially written for the occasion by Jean Ehret. The world premiere of the piece took place on 28 November 2010 during the inauguration of Le Lion de Belfort, exactly 130 years after sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834–1904) completed the iconic statue.
