Geuzen Medal Fanfare
Commissioned by the Dutch Geuzen Resistance Foundation 1940–1945 to mark the presentation of the 25th Geuzenpenning (Beggar Medal) on 14 March 2011 for the Afghan human rights activist Sima Samar and the Dutch Armed Forces.
The Geuzenpenning is an annual award given to individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to the fight for democracy and against dictatorship, racism, and discrimination. The initiative stems from the Geuzen Resistance Foundation 1940–1945, with the first award presented in 1987 to the Dutch division of Amnesty International.
The foundation’s name pays homage to the Geuzen (Beggars), who resisted Spanish rule in the Low Countries during the 16th century. During World War II, a resistance group operating around Rotterdam and Vlaardingen adopted the name “De Geuzen.” Just before fifteen members of this group were executed by the Germans in 1941, they sang Psalm 43. The melody of this psalm plays a central role in this commemorative work.
