Emerald Jubilee
This colourfully orchestrated concert march was composed in 2009 to celebrate Wil van der Beek’s emerald (40th) anniversary as a conductor. As the publisher of his transcriptions of classical compositions, I had the pleasure of working successfully with him for many years. To honour this milestone, I dedicated the work to the jubilee celebrator and to the ‘Musikverein Haaren’ (Germany), the band Van der Beek has conducted for over 35 years. This band premiered the march on 20 December 2009.
A traditional festive march is usually written in a major key, but I wanted to give this march a distinctive character by composing the main theme in F minor. This choice provided a striking contrast to the melodic central movement in a major key. Combined with its relatively slow tempo, this approach lends the march a stately and subdued quality.
