Easy Variations
Based on a French Folk Song
Practically everybody knows the French folksong ‘Sur le pont d’Avignon’. It is about St-Bénézet bridge that lies over the Rhône in the city of Avignon, in the south of France (pont in French means bridge). I created four very easy variations on this evergreen folksong. They have been written for four-part variable wind ensemble with ad lib percussion.
The text of the song is as follows:
Sur le pont d’Avignon (On the bridge of Avignon)
On y danse, on y danse (They are dancing, they are dancing)
Sur le pont d’Avignon (On the bridge of Avignon)
On y danse tous en rond (They are dancing all around)
