De Tijd
Seven time sketches based on the hymn ‘Blaenwern’
The name of the characteristic windmill De Tijd (Time) in Oostendorp intrigued the composer – a good opportunity to choose ‘time’ as a source of inspiration. The work consists of seven uninterrupted time sketches that are thematically interwoven. At the commissioner’s request, De Haan used the Welsh hymn Blaenwern as the starting point.
Sketch 1: Verleden tijd (The past)
Old newspaper reports indicate that at the beginning of the 20th century, long before the foundation of the music society. Excelsior, wind music was already being made in Oostendorp. Through a falling dissonant chord we go back to that period of time.
Sketch 2: Tijdstip 1923 (Point in time 1923)
In old writings, there is not much information to be found regarding this fact, but in 1923 Excelsior was officially founded. This is reflected within an energetic theme.
Sketch 3: Kerktijd (Church time)
Here, the hymn Blaenwern becomes more recognizable – after all, playing in church is a regular thing for Excelsior.
Sketch 4: Molen De Tijd (Windmill De Tijd – Time)
The flour mill of Oostendorp is iconic. The constantly turning movement it makes is represented by a cheerful but also capricious waltz.
Sketch 5: Tijd en vlijt (Time and diligence)
This sketch embodies the zealous rehearsals of Excelsior practicing Blaenwern. Making music together is a wonderful experience!
Sketch 6: Onbezorgde tijd (Carefree time)
In this rhythmic passage the band can fully lift the roof. You can feel the work moving toward a festive musical climax until time suddenly stands still.
Sketch 7: Ongewisse tijd (Uncertain times)
While the composer was writing the finale, a terrible war broke out in Ukraine. The impact on his state of mind was so strong that he used the theme material from the hymn to create a sorrowful atmosphere. For what will this tragedy entail for the world in the near future? There is no answer yet, but time will tell.
