The inspiration for this work was the core disaster at the Russian Chernobyl that occurred on April 26, 1986. In the first movement, Ostinato, despair, helplessness, fear, and anger are expressed. This theme is further developed in the fast second movement, Fantasia. Contrasten was the compulsory piece for the third division of the Dutch Brass Band Championships in 1986. In 1989, this composition was the compulsory piece for the final round of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.
