Since the 1990s, I have been writing almost all of my works in Moraira, Spain. It is therefore not surprising that Spanish culture is a recurring source of inspiration for my compositions, including Alhambra.
During a stay in Andalusia, I visited one of the major national heritages of Spain, the medieval fortress of Alhambra, beautifully situated against the background of the Sierra Nevada. This impressive complex of buildings is the result of centuries of building activity during the Moorish rule over Spain (711–1492).
Although the work is not meant to be especially programmatic, the Arab and particularly the Spanish influences can be recognised. In the atmospheric slow first movement, various soloists tell their stories. The fast and capricious middle section is vivacious in style but also quite dramatic. The closing movement of Alhambra is inspired by the processions which are traditionally held in Spain during the annual festivals of the Moors and Christians (Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos).
