Composed in 1996 on commission from Muziekvereniging Heijenoord in Arnhem, in collaboration with the Music Lending & Information Center of Biblioservice Gelderland.
For Spanish Triptych, I drew inspiration from Spain’s eastern coast, a region where I have regularly retreated since 1991 to compose. This triptych opens with Peñón de Ifach, the impressive high rock rising from the sea near the town of Calpe. Next, I take you to San Jaime, a tranquil urbanization in the hills near the fishing village of Moraira. The view of the Sierra de Bernia mountains inspired the final movement of the same name, which structurally resembles a passacaglia.
