Musica Helvetica
Composed in 2011 for the 4th Wallberg Contest (2012) on commission from Harmonie Volketswil, Switzerland

In the Swiss Wallberg, an annual competition for concert bands and brass bands is organized. In addition to performing a hymn and a solo piece, all orchestras are required to perform a compulsory work. For the 2012 competition, I was asked to compose this piece.
The composition is titled Musica Helvetica. It is structured as a three-part concert work, with the last two movements flowing seamlessly into each other. The first movement, Musica Prima, is a lively and virtuosic opening, incorporating jazz influences. The second movement, Musica Sacra, contrasts with this, featuring extraordinarily colorful instrumentation for the beautiful main theme. The final movement, Musica Alpina, draws inspiration from the diverse landscapes of Switzerland. With its playful character, it provides a fitting conclusion to this beautiful triptych.
