Centenary 2019
Centenary 2019 was commissioned by Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem, a fanfare orchestra from the village of Sumar in the Dutch province of Friesland, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2019.
1) Awakening Village
At the commissioner’s request this three-movement suite is based on a locally known folksong; the composer has used the beginning of it as the leitmotiv. A few lines from this song – ‘k Hear de toerklok yn ‘e fierte; Myn moaie doarpke is tichtbij (I hear the church bells ringing from afar; my beautiful village is close by) – form the source of inspiration for the first movement, that musically expresses the waking up and coming to life of the village.
2) Bintje Monument
The second movement was inspired by a sculpture created to honour Sumar headmaster Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929), who developed the well-known potato variety called ‘bintje’ in 1905. The monument is placed in such a way that the rising sun shines between the stones. The half-round form symbolizes the sun, but also the earth in which the potato grows.
3) Journey into the Unknown
The ‘journey into the unknown’ refers to the music society’s concert trip to the United States of America in 2011. This experience is considered to be one of the highlights of the fanfare’s history. In the closing movement of this work, the composer combines elements from the leitmotiv and fragments from ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ – the American national anthem.
